Thrilling Hopewell Youth Baseball Game Ends in Walk-Off Win!!
HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP– Last night at the Kane Road Fields, two Hopewell baseball teams competed in a well-played game that had an exciting ending.
The purpose of baseball at this age is to have the kids develop, get reps, learn from mistakes and to leave the field happy after having fun playing a baseball game.
I can assure you both Coach Holsinger and Coach Vukovcan’s players did just that.
This was a game that literally went back and forth for the entire 6 innings before Team Vukovcan scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning for a walk-off win.
How competitive was this game? Team Vukovcan led 7-2 after 2 innings before Team Holsinger’s squad scored 5 runs in the Top of the 3rd to tie the game. In the bottom of the 3rd, TV scored 3 runs to regain the lead before TH went back on top with 4 runs in the top of the 4th. Team Holsinger then scored 2 more runs in the Top of the 5th to go up by 3. After scoring 1 run in the bottom of the 5th to cut the deficit to 2, Team Vukovcan walked things off in the last inning to win it.
In the final frame, Christopher Spiropoulos led off the inning with a single, which was followed by singles by Grayden McNally and Kellen Haring. With the bases loaded, Trent Michael hit into a fielder’s choice which brought in a run to take the score 13-12. Next up, Will Vukovcan singled to center which scored another run and tied the game at 13. Then Brody Tournay came to the plate and on the first pitch, laced a ball to the outfield which scored Michael and gave his team the win.
FINAL SCORE: TEAM VUKOVCAN 14 TEAM HOLSINGER 13
This was a well-played game with both teams putting the ball in play and very few players striking out. Both teams collected 23 hits apiece.
Taking a look at Team Holsinger’s team, August Arostegui and Obie DeCanio both banged out 4 hits, while Max Holsinger, Blake Hosta each collected 3 hits. Mitchell Hodnicki, Adley Faust, Cash Lockerbie and Cameron Baker had 2 hits, while Mason Thumm had one hit. RBI getters for Team Holsinger were Thumm with 3, Faust, Hosta, Baker and Holsinger with 2.
Team Vukovcan’s entire lineup collected a hit and only struck out 3 times! That’s a big thing at this age in coach pitch.
Spiropoulos, Haring, Michael, Tournay all had 3 hits, while Dom Santamaria, McNally, Micah Zughaib, Thomas Edwards and Cullen Harcum had 2 apiece.
A lot of offense but a couple key defensive plays to tell you about that were both impressive and important.
In the 5th inning, pitcher Will Vukovcan fielded a ground ball and threw a runner out and followed that up by catching a pop up at the mound. Â At this age, outs in the field can be rare, so nice job Willy!
These two teams will square off again this coming Monday at 530 pm.
Team Vukovcan is back in action tonight as they host Ambridge at 7 PM.
