From Scholarship Winner to Community Leader: Zach Kovell Returns Home to Give Back

One of the most rewarding parts of covering youth and local sports at Hopewell Sports Nation is watching our stories begin to come full circle.

Earlier this year, Hopewell Sports Nation had the privilege of awarding one of its scholarships – the Hopewell Sports Nation College Scholarship to Zach Kovell, recognizing not just his athletic ability, but his work ethic, character, and commitment to personal growth. As we highlighted at the time, Zach’s journey through school and athletics reflected everything that scholarship was meant to support—drive, discipline, and a desire to make an impact beyond himself.

Now, just months after graduating and completing his first semester of college, Zach is back home for winter break—and he’s already finding ways to give back to the community that helped shape him.

Giving Back Early in His College Journey

Even in the early stages of his college career, Zach has continued to build on his passion for sports performance, training, and helping young athletes develop both physically and mentally. That passion is already translating into action.

During winter break, Zach is partnering with Greater Pittsburgh Physical Therapy (GPPT) to host Speed and Agility classes for elementary and middle school athletes, providing local kids with a chance to stay active, build confidence, and sharpen athletic fundamentals during the holiday season.

These sessions focus on more than drills and conditioning. They emphasize proper movement, effort, and a positive training environment—values Zach learned through years of sports and now aims to pass on to the next generation.

Winter Speed & Agility Classes at GPPT

Zach’s XMAS Special Speed & Agility Program begins December 20th, with classes running through January 3rd.

A Meaningful Start to Giving Back

Seeing a recent Hopewell Sports Nation scholarship recipient return home and immediately invest his time in local youth is a powerful reminder of why these stories matter. Zach is still at the very beginning of his college journey, yet he’s already demonstrating leadership and a commitment to community.

His willingness to give back during his first winter break reflects the character that earned him the scholarship in the first place—and offers a great example for young athletes looking up to him.

Hopewell Sports Nation is proud to check back in with Zach Kovell and looks forward to following his continued growth, both in college and in the positive impact he’s making right here at home.

Hello Hopewell! While I am not originally a Hopewell native, it has been my home for over 12 years. My wife and I have three beautiful children that all play Hopewell sports including baseball and softball. My wife and I are both active in coaching our Children's teams. I am a member of the Hopewell Youth Baseball Board of Directors and you will probably see me out at the fields at least a few days a week. Most recently coaching my youngest sons TBALL team.
