Hopewell 4th Grade Travel Team Beats Bethel Park in Championship Game

IMPERIAL– Congratulations to the Hopewell Boys 4th Grade Travel Team for winning the West Allegheny Tournament this weekend.

After defeating West Allegheny and Peters Township on Saturday, the Vikings took on Bethel Park, which were the #1 seed in the other side of the bracket.

After a tight 1st half in which they only led by only one point at half time, Hopewell completely dominated the 2nd half, outscoring Bethel Park, 14-3, enroute to their second tournament win of the season.

Three big keys to today’s victory were: 1) tenacious man-to-man defense in the 2nd half. 2) balanced contribution of scoring, rebounds, assists from everyone on the roster. 3) Hopewell point guard Wes Gigliotti took over in the 2nd half and was the best player on the court from the opening tip till the final buzzer.

1ST HALF SUMMARY:
*Wes Gigliotti with a nice entry pass in the paint to No. 34 Nate Newberry, with finished with a shot off the glass.  Hopewell 2-0.

*Newberry was fouled taking a shot in the paint and went to the free throw line and sunk both shots. 4-4.

*Nice set play by Hopewell, high low, as Gigliotti gets a pass underneath and finishes. Bethel Park 8-6.

*Michael Ambrose shows his range as he nails a shot from the top of the key. Bethel Park 10-8.

*Hopewell ties the game up as Gigliotti hits a deep shot from the left corner. With this basket, Hopewell would outscore Bethel Park, 19-5, for the remainder of the game. 10-10.

*Hopewell with some transition offense as Gigliotti finds No. 19 Emryk Cain, who finishes on a tough layup. Hopewell 12-10.

*Nice halfcourt offense for the Vikings as Gigliotti hits Newberry, who makes his shot from the foul line. Hopewell 13-12

2ND HALF SUMMARY:
*Good ball movement results in Ambrose getting fouled shooting. He would make 1 of 2 from the line. Hopewell 14-12.

*Gigliotti with one of his many steals in the game, and after a couple of missed shots from the Vikings, Gigliotti gets the rebound and connects on a corner jumper. Hopewell 16-12

*Next time down, Gigliotti with another steal and takes it in all by himself for a layup. Hopewell 18-12.

*Hopewell with a screen and roll, Gigliotti with a sharp pass in the corner to No. 3 Bryce Croner, who connects. Hopewell 20-12.

*Gigliotti with another steal and gets it up court to No. 11 Colton Lenart, who finishes with a nice shot off the glass. Hopewell 22-14.

*As they inbound the ball from underneath Bethel Park’s hoop, Hopewell runs their play ‘Special” and Gigliotti, who was special this game, makes a scoop shot in the lane. Hopewell 24-15.

*Following a technical foul from the Bethel Park head coach, Gigliotti went to the free throw line and makes both free throws.

FINAL SCORE: HOPEWEL 27 BETHEL PARK 15
