That was the case today with the Hopewell 8th grade girls as they let Beaver hang around and make it close before pulling away in the 4th quarter.

The Lady Vikings were clearly the more talented but to Beaver’s credit, they continued to play hard and forced Hopewell into plenty of mistakes.

In the end, it was nice strong play in the final 6 minutes by point guard Ava Ray, which settled things down and Hopewell came away with a 37-29 victory.

Calasia Cannon paced Hopewell with 14 points, Lily Enders collected 10 points and 3 blocks, Ray with 6 points, Lillian Otto with 5 points and 5 rebounds and Ellie McCoy with 2 points.

1ST QUARTER:
*Like the 7th grade did, the Lady Vikings 8th grade team were completely dominant on the boards. In this sequence, they pulled down 3 offensive boards before Enders eventually put in a layup. Hopewell 2-0.

*2 more offensive rebounds before Cannon put in a shot from the paint. Hopewell 5-0.

*Nice passing by Hopewell as Enders misses a shot but Cannon is there for the offensive rebound and 2 points. Hopewell 7-3.

*More rebounding, Enders with the miss but Otto is there to clean it up with the rebound and basket. Hopewell 9-3.

End of 1st Quarter: Hopewell 9 Beaver 5

2ND QUARTER:
Hopewell has a big 2nd quarter as they score 13 points to take an 11-point lead into halftime.

*Ray with a nice entry pass into Enders, who finishes strong. Hopewell 11-5.

*Cannon shows her outside range as she pulls up and knocks down a foul line jumper. Hopewell 13-5.

*Hopewell breaks the Beaver press, and it results in an easy basket for Enders. Hopewell 15-5.

*Ray with another nice assists as she executes a nice bounce pass into the lane for Enders, who finishes. Hopewell 17-7.

*Cannon, once again from the outside, as she shows great touch and hits a deep 3-pointer. Hopewell 20-9.

*The final basket of the half for Hopewell comes as Otto pulls down an offensive rebound and puts in a layup. Hopewell 22-9.

Halftime: Hopewell 22 Beaver 11

3RD QUARTER:
This 3rd quarter is when Hopewell was a bit sloppy with their passes and Beaver capitalized and also hit some shots. Beaver ended up outscoring Hopewell 12-4 in this quarter.

*Instead of from the outside, Cannon had a strong drive from the right wing and after missing her initial shot, grabbed the rebound and put it back in. Hopewell 25-13.

*Beaver cuts the Hopewell lead to 6 points. On a fast break, Ray with a nice pass over the Beaver defenders and finds McCoy for 2 points. Hopewell 27-19.

End of 3rd Quarter: Hopewell 27 Beaver 23

4TH QUARTER:
*Ray wasn’t afraid to battle inside and fights for a loose ball and puts in two off the glass. Hopewell 29-23

*With 3:27 left in the game and the lead down to 2 points, Vikings defense comes up big as Abby Babinsack gets a steal and finds Ray for the layup. Hopewell 31-27.

*With 2:25 left and the lead only 2, following a missed Hopewell free throw, Enders grabs the rebound and puts in a shot for 2. Hopewell 33-29.

*Then with 1:28 left, Enders grabs another offensive rebound and hits another layup. Hopewell 35-29.

*Amiyah Shell comes up with a nice steal and passes ahead to Ray for the layup to ice the game. Hopewell 37-29.

FINAL SCORE: Hopewell 37 Beaver 29.
