Checking in on Last Years Scholarship Winner – Emmett McCowin
Last year, Emmet McCowin was one of two winners of the first annual Hopewell Sports Nation Scholarship. After graduation from Hopewell Area School District, Emmet moved down Brodhead Road to the Penn State Beaver campus, where we caught up with him for an update.
“School is great so far,” says Emmet. “I’m taking a lot of general requirement courses, but my Business Calculus course does go toward my Business major, so I’m glad to be already making progress on that too.”
In preparation for college baseball, Emmet adopted an advanced hitting and throwing regimen in June to go along with his normal gym rat routine. “I already knew last Spring,” Emmet adds, “that baseball here would be amazing if I put in the work to meet the challenge. I got to meet the team back then and even took the field with them a couple of times. Coach [Jordan] Price has been so supportive and encouraging and has made me feel right at home.”
On the mound, Emmet has impressed early in the Fall season, with a perfect 0.00 ERA in two relief outings, covering 2.1 innings pitched with 4 strikeouts. At the plate, he’s boasting a .333 batting average with a .667 on-base percentage and a couple of steals. And at first base, he leads the team with a perfect fielding percentage and a couple of eye-catching digs out of the dirt on errant infield throws.
Emmet says he’s “having more fun playing baseball than ever, and I can’t wait to see what the Spring season brings.” McCowin wants to be part of something special on campus, noting that “Penn State Beaver has had some great teams in the past but some down years recently. I’m hoping to help get this team back to the playoffs where it belongs.”
Emmet’s concluding thoughts are important for this year’s Hopewell seniors to keep in mind: “It meant so much to me to get the Hopewell Sports Nation Scholarship last year. Being the first, along with Mya Parish, was really cool. Those funds helped me make this transition to college more smooth than it might have been, and I hope that tradition continues for others.”
Here at HSN we work extremely hard to find ways to bring you all the achievements of the Hopewell Athletes throughout the school year and we are thrilled to see our first scholarship recipients doing so well in their post secondary education, on and off the field.
Best of Luck Emmett on your continued success this year, we will check back in the Spring!
