Campbell’s 4 Goal Night Leads Hopewell HS Girls Soccer to 6-1 Win over South Side

This past Saturday, the Hopewell HS Girls Soccer team scrimmaged Blackhawk. Despite out-chancing them by a large margin, Hopewell couldn’t put them in the net and ended up losing 2-0.

Tonight, the Vikings hosted South Side in another scrimmage and this time scoring wasn’t an issue as Hopewell soundly defeated South Side, 6-1.

The player of the game for Hopewell was senior Angela Campbell, who recorded 4 goals). In reality, Campbell could’ve scored 6 goals if not for some strong saves by the SS goalie.

Here’s a summary of tonight’s scrimmage:

1ST HALF:
*Two chances in front by Campbell (one missed the net, the other the goalie stopped).

*Later in the half, a Viking forward sprung Campbell open for a breakaway, as she went 1-on-1 with the goalie, Campbell had to use her left foot and slid the shot just wide of the net as the goalie came out to challenge her.

*With 31:00 minutes left in the 1H, Hopewell goalie Lilly Westbrook made a nice save up-high. Westbrook played the 1st half of tonight’s scrimmage.

*HOPEWELL GOAL: Campbell finally connected as she gobbled up a loose ball at the SS 30-yard line and sprinted towards the net and tap it in at the far-right corner. Hopewell led 1-0.

*With 22:00 minutes left, Grace Hochmuth with a nice outlet pass to Caylee Sundy, who flagged it down, but her shot was denied by the SS goalie.

*HOPEWELL GOAL: 2 minutes later Sundy wasn’t denied as she made a bee line to the net from the left hash and powered it in. Hopewell 2-0.

*HOPEWELL GOAL: With 15:56 left in the 1 H, Campbell made a nice spin move around a defender and buried her second goal of the game. Hopewell led 3-0.

*With :51 seconds left in the half, Westbrook with another nice save on a hard low shot from the point.

HALFTIME: HOPEWELL 3 SOUTH SIDE 0

2nd HALF:
*Hopewell put a lot of pressure on the opposing goalie to start the second half. One of their better chances came from Gianna Amadio, who had a nice opportunity but was stopped by the SS goalie.

*HOPEWELL GOAL: Junior Aubrey Cumpston scored Hopewell first goal of the second half as she received a nice feed from the opposite corner. Cumpston was planted in front of the net and tapped it in. Hopewell led 4-0.

*HOPEWELL GOAL: After making a save, the SS goalie kicked the ball from the goalie box, but it didn’t have a ton of velocity on it, Campbell intercepted the pass, cut between the two SS defenders and scored on a mini breakaway. That was Campbell’s 3rd goal of the game. Hopewell led 5-0.

*HOPEWELL GOAL: The final goal was scored by Campbell as she took a long outlet pass from Sundy and scored on a rebound after the goalie stopped her initial shot. Goal No.4. Hopewell led 6-0.

FINAL SCORE: HOPEWELL 6 SOUTH SIDE 1

The season officially starts for the Hopewell girls this coming Monday as they travel to Avonworth. The match is set to begin at 7 PM.
