Founded in 1906, the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) represents Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) District VII, which is one of the 12 districts governed by the Constituation and By-Laws of the PIAA.

The WPIAL represents its member schools by promoting academics, the safety of participants, sportsmanship, citizenship, and lifelong values as the foundation of interscholastic athletics. The league holds championships for 26 different sports, and its member schools are made up of 10 state counties: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Washington and Westmoreland.

The WPIAL James Collins Scholar-Athlete Award program recognizes exceptional student-athletes by awarding scholarships annually to those from schools and school districts comprising PIAA District VII.

Since 1992, the league has given $698,000 in scholarships to its award recipients and celebrates the 33rd consecutive year of the award program in 2024. The Scholar-Athlete Award was renamed in honor of longtime WPIAL administrator Jim Collins after his death in 2016. From 1992 to 1996, one male and one female winner were selected. That number grew to four (two male, two female) winners in 1997 and 1998, and 16 (eight male, eight female) runners-up also receiving scholarships from 1999 to 2014. Starting in 2015, 10 male and 10 female winners were selected as winners, with 2017 being the lone exception as 21 winners (10 male, 11 female) were selected then.

“Today we are proud to recognize our 146 nominees for the 2024 WPIAL James Collins Scholar-Athlete Award! This extraordinary group of student-athletes hail from 87 schools, participate in 20 sports, & 47.2% of them rank Top 10 in their class among schools that rank. The winners of the 2024 WPIAL James Collins Scholar-Athlete Awards will be announced today at approximately 10:30 AM here on our social channels (www.wpial.org).”
A big congratulations to Hopewell’s two nominees: Zachary Landry and Christy Sundy.

Hello Hopewell! While I am not originally a Hopewell native, it has been my home for over 12 years. My wife and I have three beautiful children that all play Hopewell sports including baseball and softball. My wife and I are both active in coaching our Children's teams. I am a member of the Hopewell Youth Baseball Board of Directors and you will probably see me out at the fields at least a few days a week. Most recently coaching my youngest sons TBALL team.
