Hopewell Hosts Annual Special Olympics

Published

on

The Special Olympics is a tradition that both the NJHS and NHS do every Spring.  This great tradition moved to Hopewell 6 years ago. The guidance leaders of NJHS along with NHS work with the paraprofessionals to bring a very fun and exciting day to these very special athletes.

The NHS is in charge of getting times for races, measuring distances, and making sure that everything runs smoothly.

Each member of NJHS is paired with an athlete and helps them throughout the day. For example, my athlete was Bently S.  He was shy but sneaky athletic. The events he competed in were the softball throw, the 50-meter dash, and the 100-meter dash.  I could tell he had a great time… we both did.

The purpose of the Special Olympics is to do something special within the community for special needs children.

Hopewell Sports Nation talked with Mrs. Deanna Hiltz, mother of Special Olympics athlete Danica Hiltz.

“We love that Hopewell continues to host its own Special Olympics. It brings families, friends, and the school community together to celebrate and support Hopewell’s Special Athletes,” said Mrs. Hiltz. “These kids and young adults work hard in daily life and often don’t have time or the needed accommodations to participate in typical sports and activities. Special Olympics provides them the opportunity to be champions and inspires those of us watching that perseverance, determination and genuine camaraderie go a long way.”

If you are wondering how Danica did; Mrs. Hiltz reported, “She actually ran all 50 meters, which she’s never done. Normally she’ll walk and wave to everyone and even stop for the occasional fist bump (which she did for the 100), but I finally got to see her run!”

The Special Olympics benefits everyone in the Hopewell community.  It was a great day for all involved.
