Good Luck to the Hopewell Boys Track Team in Today’s WPIAL Team Championship

Published

on

Hopewell Sports Nation would like to wish Head Coach Jeff Brunton and the Hopewell High School Boys Track and Field team the best of luck today.

This afternoon, the Vikings team is competing in the WPIAL Class 2 Boys Team Championship at Peters Township Middle School. Hopewell will be competing against Greensburg Central Catholic, Quaker Valley and Ellwood City.

In case you’re not familiar with it, here’s how the team championship works and what Hopewell will be competing against.

Each team scores individually against each other, and the team that defeats the other 3 wins. For example, if the Hopewell hurdler finishes 2nd overall to Quaker Valley’s guy, Hopewell would score 3 points overall to Quaker Valley’s guy, but scores 5 points for first place against Greensburg Central Catholic and Ellwood City because he beat their hurdlers.

There are 18 events, and 150 total points available to be won in the meet, so a team has to score at least 75 points to win.

There are no state team playoffs though. The WPIAL is the only district that has a team playoff like this to determine the district team champion.

In order to get to the PIAA State Championship meet, Hopewell athletes have to finish in the Top Six at the individual WPIAL championships, which are held on May 15th.

Best of luck to Coach Brunton and the Vikings today!
