Former Hopewell Standout Zach Kovell Part of Record-Setting 4×400 Relay at Westminster

Former Hopewell track and field standout Zach Kovell continues to make his mark at the collegiate level, contributing to a record-breaking performance for Westminster College Friday night at Youngstown State University.

Competing in a deep and competitive field, Kovell helped Westminster’s 4×400-meter relay team place eighth overall with a time of 3:23.49 — a mark that established a new program record for the Titans. The performance not only showcased Westminster’s rising sprint program but also marked another significant milestone in Kovell’s steadily progressing collegiate career.

At Hopewell, Kovell was widely recognized as one of the program’s most dependable and team-oriented sprinters. Whether anchoring relays in championship meets or delivering points in individual sprint events, he consistently elevated team performances with his speed, composure, and competitive drive. His leadership and work ethic made him a key contributor to the Vikings’ success and set the foundation for his transition to the college ranks.

Now competing at Westminster, Kovell has continued to develop and contribute in high-level meets, and Friday’s record-setting relay effort at YSU reflects both his personal growth and his ability to perform on a collegiate stage. Being part of a school-record performance underscores the same qualities that defined his Hopewell career — reliability, determination, and a commitment to team success.

For the Hopewell track and field community, Kovell’s latest achievement reinforces what many saw throughout his high school career: an exceptional athlete whose dedication and competitive spirit would carry forward beyond graduation. His progression from standout Viking to record-setting Titan remains a source of pride for his alma mater.

As Westminster’s season continues, Kovell’s role in the program’s record book stands as a testament to the lasting impact of Hopewell athletes competing — and excelling — at the next level.

Hello Hopewell! While I am not originally a Hopewell native, it has been my home for over 12 years. My wife and I have three beautiful children that all play Hopewell sports including baseball and softball. My wife and I are both active in coaching our Children's teams. I am a member of the Hopewell Youth Baseball Board of Directors and you will probably see me out at the fields at least a few days a week. Most recently coaching my youngest sons TBALL team.
