Unyielding Spirit in the Heat: Vikings 7U Allstars Battle Through 9-Inning Thriller in 90+ Degree Showdown
On a scorching Saturday afternoon at 3000 Kane Rd, the Vikings 7U Allstars put on a performance full of heart, and relentless determination in a 9-inning, back-and-forth battle against the AYB All Stars 7U. Though the Vikings ultimately fell in a razor-close 11-10 final, their never-say-die attitude and powerful play on both sides of the ball told the real story.
The game was nothing short of a marathon—played under the sweltering summer sun with temperatures soaring over 90 degrees. But the heat didn’t slow down this Vikings squad one bit. In fact, it seemed to fuel them. The Allstars kept coming inning after inning, clawing their way back and answering the call every time momentum swung the other way.
The Vikings came out swinging in the top of the first, notching four runs off a fielder’s choice by Blake Kosta, an RBI double by Ahmad Gates, a groundout from Mitchell Hodnicki, and a sharp RBI single from MJ Schegog. In the third, Ahmad Gates again delivered with another double, pushing the lead to 5-0 and lighting up the Vikings dugout.
But AYB didn’t go quietly, rallying to tie things up in the fourth. Still, the Vikings never blinked. In the ninth inning—yes, ninth—after hours in the blazing heat, the Allstars once again surged ahead. A fielder’s choice from Tony Matthews scored a key run, and Enzo Markowitz followed up with a clutch single to bring the score to 10-8, putting the Vikings right back on top.
Every Viking played their part. The Allstars racked up an incredible 24 hits, with standout performances from Hayes Singletary, MJ Shegog and Ahmad Gates, each collecting three hits. Ahmad and Enzo both drove in two runs apiece. Kellen Haring, Tanner Kessler, Brady Daley, Mitchell Hodnicki, and Levi Magnone all contributed multiple hits to the offensive explosion.
And the defense? Rock solid. Not a single error was made all game. Tony Matthews led the way in the field with four defensive stops, showing just how locked in this team was all day long.
Notable mention as Ahmad Gates took home two MVP medals during pool play highlighting his exceptional achievement by the opposing team coaches. Ahmad has been part of the Hopewell Youth Baseball program for years since he first entered at the age of Tball, CONGRATS AHMAD!
Despite a walk-off single by AYB’s Patrick M in the bottom of the ninth that ended the game at 11-10, there’s no denying the incredible resilience and heart shown by the Vikings 7U Allstars. On a day where most teams would have wilted in the heat, the Vikings kept swinging, kept defending, and kept believing.
This wasn’t just a game—it was a showcase of everything youth sports is about: hustle, teamwork, and the unshakable will to fight for each other. The Vikings 7U Allstars may not have come away with the win, but they absolutely walked off that field with pride, respect, and momentum for whatever comes next.
Tomorrow Hopewell begins bracket play at 10:00 am vs. South Park at the Kane Road Complex.
