Hopewell Boys Basketball Drops Tough One to South Side Beaver, 75-73
SOUTH SIDE BEAVER– After playing a pretty clean and encouraging season opener against Western Beaver, the Hopewell Boys Basketball team couldn’t repeat that performance this afternoon against host South Side Beaver.
Scoring wasn’t a problem for the Vikings, unfortunately defense and turnovers, in particular, breaking the South Side press was.
Time after time, South Side was able to create turnovers, which then resulted in easy baskets.
Hopewell had a 7-point lead entering the final quarter but were outscored, 27-18, in the final frame.
The Vikings trailed after the first quarter, 15-12 but rebounded to have a solid second quarter and led 37-31 at halftime.
Hopewell much better job attacking press especially by Thomas Pipkins and Brody Rock which led to a flurry of layups mostly by James Armstrong. Hopewell scored 25 points in the 2nd quarter compared to South Side’s 16 points.Â
The 3rd quarter was a sloppy quarter by both teams with a combination of turnovers and missed layups. The physicality by both teams led to the sloppy play. Nick Adams came up with a big 3 pointer to keep Hopewell in the lead.
End of 3rd Quarter: Hopewell 55 South Side Beaver 48
South Side’s press really caused Hopewell problems in the final quarter and ultimately was the difference in the game.
FINAL SCORE: SOUTH SIDE 75 HOPEWELL 73
Taking a look at Hopewell’s box score, Zach Kovell led the Vikings with 23 points, freshman Brody Rock finished with 18 points, while freshman James Armstrong came up with 17 points.
Next up for Hopewell is a road matchup on Monday at Beaver Falls, where tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
