Hopewell Junior High Girls Basketball Split Games Against Montour
HOPEWELL TWP– After having a game postponed last Thursday, the Hopewell Girls Junior High Basketball team was back in action on Tuesday.
In their final home game of the 2024 season, the Lady Vikings 7th and 8th grade teams hosted the Montour Spartans.
Both Hopewell teams played good teams, with the 7th graders earning a dominating win, while the 8th grade team couldn’t overcome unforced turnovers and fell down the stretch.

7TH GRADE- HOPEWELL VS. MONTOUR:
This game was never really close as Hopewell dominated from the opening tip. While they were clearly the better team, the Lady Vikings still played extremely well, in particular their defense and their crisp passing, which was pinpoint all game long.
1st QUARTER:
-Amiyah Shell, with one of a number of impressive assists, comes up with a nice entry pass from the top of the key down to Ellie McCoy, who converts. Hopewell 3-0
-Following the basket, the Vikings full court press forces a turnover, as McCoy intercepts a pass and finds Brooke Otto for 2. Hopewell 5-0.
-Later in the quarter, Arionna Shell dumps it down low to McCoy, who misses her first shot but gets her own rebound and puts it back in for two. Hopewell 7-0.
-Amiyah Shell shows her shooting range as she connects on a long 3-pointer. Hopewell 10-2.
-Hopewell does a nice job breaking the press as the ball goes to McCoy near midcourt, who dribbles and finds Dallas Boyd for a layup. Hopewell 12-4.
-Amiyah Shell with another nice pass to McCoy, who makes the shot in the paint and is fouled. Ellie then made the free throw. Hopewell 15-4.
-Nice the end of the quarter, Hopewell with nice transition offense as Afton Budris with a nice pass to McCoy, who once again finishes. Hopewell 17-8.
END OF 1ST QUARTER: HOPWELL 18 MONTOUR 8
2nd QUARTER:
-The first basket of the second quarter comes from Boyd, who knocks down a corner jumper. Hopewell 20-8
-Amiayah Shell steals an inbound pass and takes it to the basketball, she makes the shot and is fouled. Hopewell 22-8.
-Later in the quarter, Luz Jimenez with an assist to Boyd, who connects on a shot from near the foul line. Hopewell 24-8.
-Anonna Shell comes up with the steal and goes coast to coast for the layup. Hopewell 26-8.
HALFTIME: HOPEWELL 26 MONTOUR 12
3RD QUARTER:
-Great passing sequence for Hopewell as Amiyah Shell pass to her sister Anonna who then finds Boyd for the layup. Hopewell 28-16.
-Amiyah Shell pulls down a defensive rebound and takes it the length of the court for a layup. Hopewell 30-18.
-Brooke Otto with a steal, takes a shot, McCoy gets the offensive rebound and puts it in for 2. Hopewell 32-18.
-Otto with another steal dribbles into the paint and pass to Amiyah Shell for the layup. Hopewell 38-18.
END OF 3RD QUARTER: HOPEWELL 38 MONTOUR 18
4TH QUARTER:
-Hopewell breaks the Montour press as Amiyah Shell dribbles coast to coast for 2. Hopewell 40-18.
-More transition offense for the Vikings as Otto pulls down the rebound, and eventually the ball goes to Anonna Shell who converts another layup. Hopewell 42-20.
-More Anonna Shell as she intercepts a pass and takes it in for 2 more. Hopewell 44-20.
-Last basket of the night for Hopewell as Jimenez gets an offensive rebound and banks a shot off the glass for 2.
FINAL SCORE- HOPEWELL 46 MONTOUR 20
HOPEWELL BOX SCORE: Amiyah Shell with 14 points and 6 rebounds, Ellie McCoy 13 points and 6 rebounds, Dallas Boyd 8 points, Arionna Shell 7 points, Brooke Otto 2 points and Luz Jimenez 2 points.
8TH GRADE- HOPEWELL VS. MONTOUR
This was a game of evenly matched teams but in the end, Hopewell just committed too many unforced turnovers, and Montour did a better job of rebounding in key situations.
1ST QUARTER:
-Following a Montour basket, Hopewell breaks the press as Calasia Cannon dribbles the length of the court for 2. Tie game at 4.
-Lily Enders goes in strong for a basket and is fouled. Hopewell 6-4.
-Enders then with some nice passing as she dribbles into the paint and kicks it out to Abby Babinsack in the corner for 2. Hopewell 8-6.
END OF 1ST QUARTER: MONTOUR 11 HOPEWELL 8
2ND QUARTER:
-Montour jumps out to a 5-point lead but Cannon connects on a 3-pointer off of an inbounds play. Montour 13-11
-Hopewell hits the boards and it results in 2 points from Ava Ray to give the Vikings the lead. Hopewell 15-13.
-Hopewell regains the lead as they break the press, and Ray finds Babinsack once again for a corner jump shot. Hopewell 19-17.
-Montour then went on a late 7-0 run before Ellie McCoy comes up with a steal and then dribbles in for a layup. Montour 24-21.
HALTIME- MONTOUR 26 HOPEWELL 21
3RD QUARTER:
-Cannon did her best to keep the Vikings in the game. She pulls down a rebound and takes it the length of the court for a layup. Montour 28-23
-Cannon with a steal and finds Babinsack down low for 2. Montour 32-26
-Hopewell breaks the Montour press as the ball goes to McCoy, who passes to Ray, who dishes to Babinsack for 2 more. Montour 35-28.
END OF 3RD QUARTER: MONTOUR 37 HOPEWELL 29
Hopewell made a few three throws and Cannon made two more field goals, but it wasn’t enough.
FINAL SCORE: MONTOUR 47 HOPEWELL 38
HOPEWELL BOX SCORE: Calasia Cannon 18 points, Lillian Otto 2 points and 8 rebounds, Abby Babinsack 9 points, Ava Ray 5 points, Lily Enders 4 points.
The Hopewell 7th and 8th grade team will be back in action tomorrow as they travel to Brentwood.
