Swim Season Kicks Off HSN Interview with Kathi Lopez!
Hopewell Sports Nation sat down with The Hopewell Swim Coach Kathi Lopez to get some detailed information in an interview where we dove into the major updates concerning the Hopewell Swim Team for 2025.
The Season starts November 18th, full schedule for boys and girls can be found on the website link https://hopewell.bigteams.com/main/teamschedule/id/3646575/seasonid/4864677
Coach Lopez commented on some bright spots for the season with “2 state qualifiers returning to the girls team along with a few returning WPIAL qualifiers. We also have a well-rounded, strong support with the rest of the team.
The Boys team has a lot of strong returning swimmers. We graduated many of our strongest swimmers the last 2 years, but I expect our guys to step up this season.
We have a big group of juniors and seniors again this season, and HSN will be keeping up with Coach Lopez to call these players out specifically in future articles, to highlight their achievements.”
HSN had to ask Coach Lopez what the status of the pool itself was since last week the school board decided to move forward with a consolidation program that would be closing down the pool and the entire junior high building. “The pool status has been an issue. We were able to get the pre-season going, but were out this week with issues and hope to get back in Tuesday.” It’s no secret as it’s been highlighted many times by the school board that the pool is in bad need of repairs and has a very large price tag to get it back into shape. The constant repairs and upkeep are a challenge for the shrinking school district.
“To say we are disappointed about the future without a pool, would be an understatement. That being said, I’m confident the district is trying to forge relationships with other districts to keep the team in the water and promote future success” said Lopez.
“Our district administration and boosters do an outstanding job of supporting our team. I’m hoping as I do each year, that the team votes in great captains with new ideas and perspectives. That won’t take place until the season officially starts. We definitely welcome any new swimmers to sign up. Please sign up in the Athletic office ASAP if wanting to join the team. I prefer that as at a starting point swimmers who want to swim can swim at least 2 lengths of the pool freestyle.”
