Around Hopewell
Kids Marathon Weekend for Independence Elementary Students
Independence Elementary is in its second year of the Kids of Steel after school training program which leads up to the one mile Pittsburgh Kids Marathon. Today we had 14 kids who ran the kids marathon and crushed it! It is a great event for the kids and Families. We would love to have more Hopewell students run with us next year.
The Pittsburgh Kid’s Marathon is part of the activities surrounding the Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon. This was a record-breaking Kids Marathon with 8, 500 kids running this year. More than 260 schools and organizations took part in the marathon but it is not required to run with a group. The kids were divided into 20 heats. The aim of the Kids Marathon isn’t to run the full 26.2 miles in one go. They complete the last miles on race day after accumulating the 25.2 miles through the Kids of Steel program and other activities. Kids are credited a mile for every 15 minutes of physical activity. The marathon had mascots at the start and surprises such as bubbles bend, a downtown drumline and cowbell corner. All kids received a medal at the finish line.
The Kids Marathon also has a Finish Line Festival at Point State Park at the conclusion. They do time the event but there really aren’t any winner in the event. It’s all about completing the journey.
