Hopewell Softball
HW Varsity Softball with Tough Game against Union
On a bitter cold and raining evening the HW Varsity Vikings struggled to get their offense moving while the Union Varsity Scotties seemed to have no issue slugging the ball.
The Union Area Varsity Scotties jumped out early in the first putting up five runs with a double from Fisher, scoring two runs. Preuhs homered to right field scoring two runs and Cameran singled scoring the fifth run of the inning.
The Hopewell Varsity Vikings put up one run in the bottom of the first on an absolute smash from Chloe Nale to right center her first at bat and first home run of her senior year. Unfortunately that was all the offense the Vikings could put together in the game as the Scotties pitcher rung up 17 strikeouts on the night. HW did manage to load the bases in the bottom of the fifth with Nale, Parish and Katkich all reaching but failed to drive in any runs.
Kara Barkovich opened the game and pitched six consecutive innings. She gave up 14 hits and 10 earned runs. Although a rocky start for Kara she showed poise on the mound handling a tough situation and managed to strike out 8 Scottie’s. The HW bench managed to stay positive throughout the game, through the cold and rainy weather demonstrating the spirit of a championship team. The skill is there for Kara as we saw good speed and off-speed action from Kara, time and reps will help build this pitcher to be a driving force for the HW Vikings this season.
HSN will be there all season to bring the highlights of each game. The Vikings take on the Ambridge Varsity Bridgers in their next game on Monday.
