Two Hopewell Swimmers Headed To the PIAA Championships

Published

on

Hopewell sent a team of seventeen varsity swimmers to the WPIAL Championships at the University of Pittsburgh’s Trees Pool on Thursday February 29 and Friday March 1. Hopewell Swimming has a long and storied tradition of excellence, but this year’s WPIAL performance ranks among its most shining moments.

Many members of the team posted best personal times in individual and team relay events, but two swimmers in particular took their achievements to the next level, extending their seasons for one more big-time event.

Freshman Lindsey Brown and freshman Hazel McCowin learned this weekend that their WPIAL performances qualified for the PIAA state swimming championship at Bucknell University on March 15 and 16. The two will travel across the state with Coach Kathi Lopez for the biggest swim meet of the year in Pennsylvania.

Thanks to her performance at WPIALs, Lindsey will compete against the best in the state in the 100 Freestyle, a highly competitive event.  Hazel reached the podium twice at WPIALs and qualified for the state meet in both events: the 200 Individual Medley (in which she also broke the Hopewell High School record) and the 500 Freestyle.

Hopewell Sports Nation will have continuing coverage of these ladies’ journey to the PIAA championship.
