Hopewell Girls Volleyball To Begin Open Gyms and Have Upcoming Junior High Tryouts

If you have a girl that attends Hopewell Junior High School and is looking for a sport to participate in, there’s an opportunity for them.

Hopewell High School Girls Volleyball Coach Terry Borkovic will be having upcoming tryouts for the 7th and 8th grade volleyball teams. These tryouts will take place a week from today, Monday, February 5th from 3:00-5:00 and Tuesday, February 6th from 3:00-5:00 PM. Both of these tryouts will take place in Gym A.

Aside from continuing as the high school girls coach, Coach Borkovic will also be coaching the Hopewell Girls Junior High Volleyball program.

Along with these tryouts, starting today, the Hopewell volleyball program will be having open gym workouts on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at the High School from 3:00-5:00 PM.

Hopewell Sports Nation caught with Hopewell’s Hall of Fame volleyball coach to ask him about these open gyms along with the upcoming tryouts for the junior high program.

“We started open gym in early December,” said Borkovic. “We’ve had six or seven sessions thus far. We focus on teaching/practicing the basic volleyball skills of passing, digging, attacking, serving, setting, and blocking. We also work on court movement skills. We definitely do not have a numbers problem. We’ve been getting 45 to 50 girls at each session.”

“There will be 12-15 players on the 7th grade team. The same for the 8th grade team. Obviously, we are seeking good athletes, girls with good character, strong work ethic and a growth mindset. After we choose the teams, we don’t have a lot of time before our scrimmage on February 14th at Quaker Valley. Coach Lexi Thompson and I hope to have the fundamentals in place as we will then focus on team concepts, defense, serve receive patterns, etc. Coach Thompson (7th grade coach) will have her hand full as this is all new to the 7th graders. My job (8th grade coach) will be much easier as the 8th team will be entering their second season of volleyball. I spent my teaching career with this age group. I love being around this young people. Their enthusiasm is unbelievable, I’m excited and can’t wait to get started.”
