Despite Slow Start, Hopewell Jr. High Basketball Gold Team Blasts Avonworth, 68-38
For the first time this season, Coach Biega’s Gold Junior High team met some opposition at the start of the game.
In reality, it was more about the mistakes that Hopewell was making as opposed to what Avonworth was doing but never less the Vikings were challenged.
But as great teams do, they responded and for the next three quarters resembled the team that we’re used to seeing.
For the second straight game, various Viking players contributed to this 30-point win over Avonworth.
1ST QUARTER SUMMARY
-Hopewell breaks the press as Avery Bokor finds Brody Rock for a layup. Hopewell 2-0.
-Nice crisp outlet as Bokor hits Tre Cameron for an easy 2. Hopewell 7-5.
-Hopewell’s trademark defense leads to 2 as following a steal, Cameron misses a shot, but James Armstrong gobbles up the rebound and puts it back for 2. Hopewell 9-5.
-With :45 seconds left in the quarter; Maddox Fattore knocks down a corner jump shot. Hopewell 11-10.
-Armstrong with a miss but Bokor gets the offensive board and a layup. Hopewell 13-10.
-Then with 3 seconds left, Bokor with the missed 3 but Armstrong with the rebound and layup. Hopewell 15-10.
END OF 1ST QUARTER: HOPEWELL 15 AVONWORTH 10
2ND QUARTER SUMMARY
-Cameron with a nice feed inside to Armstrong down low for 2 plus the foul. Hopewell 18-10.
-Cameron with another great assist, this time to Rock, who converts an acrobatic reverse layup. Hopewell 20-12.
-Bokor picks up the loose ball in their own end and hits a shot off the glass plus he’s fouled. Hopewell 23-12.
-Cameron with the steal, who finds Armstrong who then passes to Rock for the layup. Hopewell 25-14.
-Vikings break the press, Bokor with the miss but Rock gets the rebound, layup and is fouled. Hopewell 27-14.
-Following a defensive rebound, Armstrong with an outlet pass to Biega, who comes up with the nice catch and lays it in. Hopewell 29-17.
-Transition, Rock with a fast ball pass to Cameron, who takes it in strong for 2. Hopewell 32-20.
-Nice ball movement in their half-court offense, Cameron dishes to Armstrong who then hits Rock who’s cutting in off the wing. Pretty. Hopewell 34-20.
-:30 seconds left in the half, Rock comes up with the steal and layup. Hopewell 38-23.
-Right before the buzzer, Armstrong with the defensive board with a long, strong outlet to Bokor for the layup. Hopewell 40-23.
HALFTIME: HOPEWELL 40 AVONWORTH 25
3RD QUARTER SUMMARY
-Coach Biega goes back to a play that worked well in the 1st half, Armstrong gets the ball at the foul line and connects with Rock as he cuts in for a layup. Hopewell 42-25.
-Armstrong with the steal at midcourt, goes in for a layup, doesn’t convert but gets his own rebound and puts it in. Hopewell 51-27.
-Armstrong with the rebound with a long outlet to Biega, who once again makes a nice catch and finishes for 2. Hopewell 53-27.

4TH QUARTER SUMMARY
-Rock comes up with rebound, dribbles the length of the court before passing to Biega, who makes a nice cut to the basket. Hopewell 60-27.
-Biega with 2 more as he gets physical down the lane and hits the shot off the glass. Hopewell 64-29.
-Pretty fast break as Armstrong connects with Biega who passes to Bokor. Hopewell 66-31.
-Hopewell’s final basket of the night, Javion Lindsey with the rebound, passes to Kareem Hairston, who converts the shot plus is fouled. Hopewell 68-36.

Hopewell (4-0) has 2 games next week (at home against Moon and a road game at South Fayette) before going on Christmas break.
