Hopewell Bowling
Bowling is a sport!!!
Outside sports not your thing in the fall and winter?
Come down to Sheffield Lanes on Saturdays at 9:30 am and get your bowl on with the Hopewell Junior Bowling League.
Everything you need to know about the league:
League Name: Sheffield Juniors
Location: Sheffield Lanes
When: Saturday mornings. Practice 9:30-10:00. Games start at 10:00 (bowl 3 games). Season typically starts the Saturday after Labor Day and runs for about 32 weeks. End date is usually mid-April.
Coaches: Scott Martin and Mark Sembower
What the league does and who can join:
Sheffield Juniors serves youth from as young as 5 (that’s not a hard lower age – we have even had a few younger than that over the years) through high school, with a focus on developing athletic skills (yes, bowling is a sport!) and, hopefully, a lifelong love of bowling. And, unlike some sports, no one sits on the bench during Junior bowling – everyone participates in every game. Coaches are available on Saturday mornings to help during practice (9:30-10:00 AM) and games (starting at 10:00 AM, usually done before noon). At the younger ages, the focus is on having fun and learning the basics. At the older ages, the focus becomes more on solidifying mechanics and working the mental side, just generally preparing them for High School bowling (if they choose to join the team), tournaments, and – eventually – adult leagues.
At least one Saturday in August is usually set aside for sign-ups and a pre-season clinic conducted by the coaches. Having said that, we take new bowlers all season – there is no end date to register. To make things fair across all bowlers, each bowler receives a handicap based on their average. Lower averages receive a higher handicap and higher averages receive a smaller handicap. Each season is divided into quarters. We cap off the season with a “roll off” (bowling’s version of the playoffs), where only the winners of each quarter participate. The high score on that day is our champion for the year. We also have an end-of season banquet (Ricky Dee’s Pizza!), where awards are distributed for everything from perfect attendance to high games/series/average to championship trophies.
