Hopewell Softball
That’s a Wrap for the HW Varsity/JV Softball Spring Trip at the Cal Ripken Experience in Tennessee!!!
The Hopewell Varsity and Junior Varsity Teams truly represented Hopewell in Pigeon Forge, TN this week. Overall the Varsity team came out even over four games going 2-2, and the JV Team came ended UNDEFEATED going 2-0 with a dominate showing!!!
HSN was there supporting the HW Softball teams and provided coverage of the event. There were many takeaways for the teams, coaches, players and parents who were able to experience this trip. The new challenges brought pushed the athletes to higher levels of productivity, the losses taught them what they will need to work on if they’re going to be successful in their Home/Divisional play. Not knowing what kind of competitors you will be up against is a challenge these teams took head on and when adversity came knocking they rose to the occasion.
Final 2 Games Recap – Varsity and Junior Varsity
Varsity Game against Rootstown – Friday 3/30 – In the final game of the week for the Varsity team the girls fell short 5-1 vs. Rootstown High School.
An inside the park home run by Rootstown in the first inning put Hopewell down early. Unfortunately Hopewell would not put up a run until the 6th inning and that would be all of the offensive production for Hopewell. The Rootstown pitcher put up 11 strike outs silencing the HW bats.
Although she takes the loss for Hopewell Pitcher Kara Barkovich had little offensive support and managed to put up an impressive 11 strike outs of her own. She went 6 innings , gave up 5 runs on 8 hits, with only 2 of those runs being earned.
Errors were the difference in this game with Hopewell putting up 6. The team has what they need to be successful and we here at HSN have no doubt they will get back to practice in Hopewell and work through their defensive opportunities like they always do.
Junior Varsity Game against Salem High School – Friday was also the last game for the JV team, over the course of their week and two games the HW JV team was not short of any production in offense. They had a commanding lead in both games producing double digit scores in both games.
Alana Covalt had a big offensive game driving in five runs on three hits to lead the JV team. Covalt doubled in the second scoring three, doubled in the fourth scoring two, and hit an inside the park home run in the fifth scoring one.
Hopewell JV Vikings got on the board in the first inning after Covalt grounded out, scoring two runs. Hazel McCowin singled, scoring one run, and an error scored one run.
HW scored six runs on five hits in the top of the second inning. Covalt doubled, scoring three runs, Mikaela David hit an inside the park home run, scoring two runs, and McCowin hit a solo inside the park home run.
Salem also put up 8 runs in the game on three hits in the bottom of the second. Swanson hit an inside the park home run, scoring three runs, Ingeldue hit a solo inside the park home run. Multiple errors by the JV defense who struggled to get the outs needed to close the inning gave four additional runs away to Salem.
In the top of the fifth inning Dakota Roche grounded out scoring one run and Covalt hit an inside the park home run.
Annabeth Sembower took to the circle for the Vikings and starting pitcher gave up four hits and eight runs, two earned over three innings, striking out four and walking two. Allison Ramaley threw two innings of relief for Sembower surrendering zero hits, striking out four and did not give up a base to a single walk.
