Hopewell Pony League Opens Fall Season Energized and Motivated Under Coach Yesionek
The Hopewell 25 Fall Pony team, led by Coach Bryan Yesionek, kicked off their Fall season with a hard-fought matchup against CV and the Blackhawk Cougars this week. Coming off a commanding win against CV outscoring them 15-5, Team Yesionek was ready for their matchup tonight against Blackhawk. While the final score favored Blackhawk, 10-6, the young Hopewell squad showed plenty of promise, resilience, and offensive spark in their second outing of the season.
Hopewell broke through in the top of the fourth inning, capitalizing on hustle and smart baserunning. A dropped third strike plated one run with Mason Santamaria scoring from first base. Followed by pressure on the defense that created two more runs (Channing Yesionek and Nico Yanessa) on an error—giving Hopewell an early lead and momentum.
At the plate, Rilynn Davis provided a spark in the heart of the order, driving in two runs and collecting a hit. David Johnson and Mason Santamaria each added a hit as well, showing depth in the lineup and keeping the pressure on Blackhawk’s defense throughout the game.
On the mound, David Johnson set the tone with a steady start. The right-hander allowed just one hit and no runs over two innings, striking out one and keeping Blackhawk’s offense in check early. Connor Eiler and Channing Yesionek came in as relief and pitched well getting Blackhawk to put the ball in play giving Hopewell a chance to make the needed outs.
Though Blackhawk was able to rally in the middle innings, Hopewell continued to battle, putting runners on base and competing until the final out. The game showcased both the team’s potential and their determination to play tough, exciting baseball.
With the first two games under their belt, Coach Yesionek’s team has already built a foundation of effort, energy, and teamwork that will serve them well throughout the season. Hopewell now looks ahead to their next challenge as they welcome NB Pony 25 Fall on Tuesday.
Hopewell Sports Nation was at the game and spent some time post game talking with Coach Yesionek who sees a lot of talent and promise in this group of kids, “Tonight was a tough one offensively as we only managed three hits, but I’m really encouraged by what I see from this group. It’s a young team with some players stepping into new positions, and they’re beginning to build great chemistry together. Every player is giving 100% and showing what it means to be a good teammate. We had some quality at-bats against strong pitching, ran the bases aggressively, and got solid efforts on the mound. While our defense wasn’t quite where it needs to be yet, that’s part of the growth process, and I know this group will keep improving each game.” – Coach Yesionek
