Hopewell New Boys Soccer Coach Nathan Richter Talks About Future Goals
Improvement, enjoyment and experience: the measurements of success for our new Hopewell High School boys’ soccer coach Nathan Richter.
Richter was hired to take the place of Nick Mohrbacher, who resigned after 14 years as head coach of the Vikings program.
Richter attended Saint Francis of Pennsylvania and has an extensive background of coaching. He currently coaches for F.C. Pittsburgh, and has previously coached for Northern Steel, North United, Mars High School and Sewickley Academy.
Richter is passionate about soccer, “My favorite thing about coaching soccer is building relationships with the players and teaching them my passion. Knowing I had a hand in improving players both on and off the field is very rewarding,” said Richter.
Hopewell’s new coach is hoping to bring a new style of coaching and play to the boys on the team. An important factor to add to his coaching style is teaching them a different approach to the game as he wants to show them how to be successful within that approach.
“Wins and losses are an easy measurement stick,” Richter tells HSN. “Yes, we talk about trophies, but I feel it’s important that we talk about enjoying the game and about the experiences that we have. I want to ensure that everyone creates important memories.”
Richter’s primary goal is to help improve his players not only on the soccer field, but to try and make them better off the field as well. Being successful means a lot to the coach, and to the players as well.
“I view success in soccer as team, a team on and off the field,” said Hopewell junior Paul Thompson.
Richter’s optimism and the recent success of the boys’ soccer program provide potential for a winning combination.
Hopewell advanced to the WPIAL Playoffs this past season, before losing to Shady Side in the second round. Richter acknowledged the programs past success and wants to try and add to it.
“My hope is to obviously make the playoffs and challenge for the section title,” said Richter. “I think that would be our minimum goal. We want to build upon the fantastic season the team had last year.
This gives Hopewell a good standard to live up to and a goal to try and achieve as well.
