On Friday, January 23rd, 2026, I had the pleasure of meeting Hopewell’s newest Superintendent of Schools, who had some very interesting opinions and information on her plans for the school district, curriculum, and the building project. Below you will find a list of questions she was prompted with, followed by her answers.

1. How do you define “success” for a school district

R: Dr. Hobson identifies four key pillars of district success. First is student outcomes, where measurable growth serves as an indicator of achievement. Second is operational well-being, which includes maintaining financial stability, optimizing learning facilities, and increasing enrollment. Third is equity, ensuring that opportunities and resources are distributed fairly across the student body. Finally, she emphasizes community trust, which is built through listening, transparency, and mutual respect between the district and the public.

When asked about her plan for transparency, Dr. Hobson highlighted three primary goals:

  • Consistent Communication: Creating a monthly newsletter to keep the community in the loop on both successes and district information.

  • Collaborative Feedback: Implementing parent and teacher advisory groups to gather diverse perspectives, ensuring that those “on the ground” have a direct line to leadership.

  • Active Presence: Increasing her physical visibility at community events to build trust and offer an informal space for parents to communicate.

2. What is your philosophy on transparency in leadership?

R: Dr. Hobson believes that when leaders and community members share a strong foundation of trust, it naturally leads to a more transparent and open environment. This culture of collaboration ensures that the district remains accessible and effective for every audience it serves.

3. What are the core values that guide your leadership?

R: She stated that her mission is student-centered, meaning the impact of her leadership decisions on the students in the entire district. She also stated that cooperative and shared leadership are a large component of her values. When everyone shares the same vision, she believes it can be accomplished.

4. How do you stay connected to what is happening in individual classrooms?

R: Dr. Hobson identifies personal connection to individual classrooms as the most rewarding aspect of her career in education. To maintain this, she has established bi-weekly walkthroughs with building administrators to observe active learning from her perspective. These visits allow her to witness the execution of district initiatives and gather diverse perspectives from students. During these interactions, she engages directly with students, asking about their activities and experiences to ensure her leadership decisions are rooted in the reality of the classroom environment.

5. What role should technology play in the modern classroom?

R: Dr. Hobson believes technology is a tool to enhance, not replace, the essential work of teachers. She specifically views AI as an opportunity for growth, provided it is used correctly. Instead of using AI to generate easy answers, she encourages students to use it to broaden their understanding of various topics. In her vision, learning the right way to interact with AI algorithms will allow students to achieve greater success and gain extra support in challenging subjects.

6. How do you define a “well-rounded” education?

R: Dr. Hobson spoke about making connections with students, ensuring that they know staff and educators care about them. She also remarked that she is very focused on building strong relationships with students, which will inadvertently make her more approachable.

7. How do you plan to support Career and Technology College students (CTC)?

R: Dr. Hobson has a personal connection to the CTC program and realizes that college is not for everyone. She believes that students who have passions—whether hands-on activities or technology-based activities—should receive support to help them excel. Additionally, she emphasized her belief in making sure there is a pathway for every student in the Hopewell Area School District. She also wants to ensure that at the high school level, when students leave, their pathway is clearly defined and they have been provided the resources to be successful.

She provided a statistic from a previous position as a high school administrator: about 75 percent of students were sent to college, but only about 45 percent of those students succeeded in their chosen pathway. After analyzing her student population and understanding what the school could offer to help students succeed, she implemented programs that helped students either succeed at a higher rate in college or pursue an alternative pathway within a CTC or CTE program.

8. What is your philosophy on homework and student workload?

R: She stated that homework should have a purpose that expands the knowledge of a subject so that a student can better grasp the material. She mentioned application versus practice, emphasizing that application-based homework is more beneficial than repetitive practice. “In today’s society with technology, sending home a practice page with problems that can be answered easily with technology is not something I would consider a worthwhile assignment, but an application assignment of what you learned would make more sense.”

9. How do you plan to handle controversial topics or community disagreements?

R: Dr. Hobson brought up the parent advisory committee again, stating that she hopes this will allow conversations to be had upfront rather than behind closed doors. Additionally, she emphasized her communication strategy—communicating early, clearly, and often—which normally helps avoid miscommunications and misunderstandings.

10. What steps will you take to ensure all students feel represented in the curriculum?

R: Dr. Hobson stated that making student voices heard and constantly taking feedback will allow students to feel represented in the district’s offerings. She also mentioned analyzing course enrollment statistics to identify factors behind low enrollment and implementing steps to improve those outcomes.

11. How do you plan to handle the rising influence of AI and social media on students?

R: Dr. Hobson said that continuous education and support for staff and students on the proper use of AI will help mitigate potential issues and negative uses of AI. She emphasized that effective AI use is centered on proper prompting, allowing students to expand their knowledge rather than simply getting answers.

12. How do you support student athletes and their physical well-being?

R: Dr. Hobson broke this down into three parts: the health of the athlete, safety, and academics. By ensuring all three are addressed, she believes students will receive the support they need. She mentioned maintaining coach training and other coaching resources to ensure students get the best instruction possible. She also shared her personal experience as a high school athlete and acknowledged the challenge of balancing school, work, and sports.

13. What makes a school district a “great place to work”?

R: She stated that when everyone understands their goals and the district’s vision for the future, it becomes a great place for both teachers and students. She emphasized that all contributors should feel valued for what they bring to the metaphorical table.

14. How do you foster a culture of empathy toward students with neurodiversity?

R: She said that outlook is key. As superintendent, when she displays empathy, awareness, and understanding, she hopes that it influences others to adopt the same perspective. She emphasized appreciating the differences everyone brings and understanding how neurodiverse students perceive and comprehend topics, stating that the district should embrace everyone.

15. Where do you see this district in five years?

R: Dr. Hobson said that she is competitive and wants Hopewell to be one of the top, if not the top, districts in Beaver County. While being #1 may not happen in five years, her goal is constant improvement. She also discussed the building project and emphasized keeping the community informed and being upfront about decisions to make the process as seamless as possible.

16. How do you stay ahead of educational trends?

R: Dr. Hobson stated that continuous learning through reading, webinars, conferences, and asking questions helps her stay updated on new educational trends. Staying current ensures students benefit the most from their education.

17. Who was a teacher who changed your life, and why?

R: She said that her second-grade teacher, Ms. Lemon, inspired her to pursue education. At the beginning of second grade, she struggled with reading, but Ms. Lemon’s efforts helped her develop a love for reading, eventually leading her to become an English teacher.

18. What is one thing about you that people might be surprised to learn?

R: She said that during her senior year playing field hockey, her team won the state championship. She scored the only goal during regulation and again in overtime. Her team was the first to win a state championship. She noted that her team was not expected to succeed, and achieving this accomplishment was particularly meaningful.

19. What do you want your legacy to be in this district?

R: Dr. Hobson said she wants to be remembered as the superintendent who impacted district culture and academics, with results visible through higher enrollment and student achievement.

20. How are you going to handle the building project that our district has started to undertake?

R: She has already set up bi-weekly meetings with the architecture firm, monthly meetings with the school board, finalized the timeline and logistics, and reviewed building layouts. She wants all timelines to be met in a fiscally responsible way. She reiterated that communicating early, clearly, and consistently will help reduce stress for the community during this project.

21. How would you, as a female superintendent, encourage other females to pursue the same level of education that you have?

R: Dr. Hobson shared that only about 30 percent of superintendents in the United States are female. Her advice to anyone considering high-level administration is simple: just do it.

Overview:

Dr. Hobson is a charismatic leader who goes out of her way to ensure student needs are met while fostering a sense of community. She has hit the ground running and is determined to see results. Hopewell Sports Nation now has a strong superintendent—let’s watch her work and see how this new Viking leader steers the ship in the right direction.
