Hopewell Sports Nation: A Commitment to Youth and Community Engagement

Hopewell Sports Nation (HSN) is on a mission to be a dynamic and positive resource for the Township of Hopewell, its residents, and especially its students. Through its extensive coverage of local sports, scouting activities, musicals, and other school events, HSN is dedicated to shining a spotlight on the amazing achievements of our youth. As part of an exciting rebranding initiative, HSN is expanding its reach to include more sports, activities, and innovative partnerships with booster programs to enhance the exceptional youth programs already in place within Hopewell.

In the weeks to come, readers can expect more in-depth coverage of a variety of sports, fresh fundraising ideas aimed at supporting Hopewell’s youth, and feature articles spotlighting as many students as possible giving a platform to the hardworking and talented individuals who make our community proud.

One of those Rising Stars in Hopewell’s Volleyball Program is Miss. Emily Crisi.

This week, Hopewell Sports Nation had the privilege of sitting down with Emily Crisi. A soft-spoken yet quietly determined leader, Emily is making waves not only in high school volleyball but also in the local club volleyball scene.

Growing up in a volleyball family, Emily’s love for the sport was sparked by watching her older sister, Amber, who also played for Hopewell. “I watched her play when I was younger, and it ignited my passion to compete”, Emily recalls. Her early exposure to volleyball motivated her to start playing at just 9 years old. To hone her skills, she attended training camps at Slippery Rock University, participated in private lessons, and worked with Pit Elite Clinics all of which laid the foundation for her development as a standout player.

Today, Emily plays as a Defensive Specialist (DS) for the Hopewell Varsity Volleyball team, where her skills and leadership have earned her the respect of both her teammates and coaches. HSN spoke with Coach Terry Borkovich who commented on her skills  “Emily has played club volleyball since 8th grade, she has a great attitude and work ethic she will be in the mix this year on Varsity.” Emily amassed nearly 150 digs on the Hopewell JV team.

In addition to her high school commitments, Emily plays for Renaissance, a local club league, where she serves as the setter. “I was hesitant about trying out for the club team, but my teammates encouraged me, and it worked out,” she shares. Although she is versatile, Emily enjoys the challenge of the setter position, appreciating the deeper strategic elements it involves.

This past weekend, Emily competed in the Steel City Freeze Volleyball Tournament at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, showcasing her talent and determination in one of the regions most competitive events.

Training, Dedication, and Work Ethic: Emily’s Approach to Success

When asked about the key to performing at a high level, Emily is quick to emphasize the importance of training and commitment. “I practice three days a week, focusing on conditioning and lifting weights. I also attend private lessons, clinics, and camps whenever possible,” she explains. Despite standing at only 5’1”  Emily places particular emphasis on building leg strength, which is essential for improving her jumping ability. “At my height, I need to work extra hard to build strength in my legs” she adds.

But for Emily, the hard work is far from a chore. “It doesnt feel like work to practice, it is fun because I get to play with my friends,”  she says. This passion for the game fuels her drive to continually improve, and its clear that her dedication to volleyball runs deep.

Looking to the future, Emily has set her sights on guiding the Hopewell Varsity Volleyball team to even greater heights. “Next year is the year, we got so close this year” she says, referencing their near-miss at the WPIAL finals. Her ultimate goal is to secure a state championship for Hopewell, a feat she is determined to achieve.

College Aspirations: Volleyball and Beyond

Emily’s ambitions don’t stop at high school. She is already exploring college volleyball programs, considering how the right college opportunity could provide both an education and a chance to continue playing the sport she loves. While her primary focus is on pursuing a career as a Radiation Technician, the opportunity to play volleyball at the collegiate level is a prospect she would embrace with excitement.

“I’m talking with a college coach and exploring my options, Emily says. The opportunity to continue playing volleyball in college would be amazing, but my number one priority is my education.”

When asked about college players she admires, Emily immediately cites Olivia Babcock from the University of Pittsburgh. “Olivia is a solid leader and really owns the game, she carries herself well, both on and off the court.”

A Humble Athlete Off the Court

Outside of volleyball, Emily leads a humble life. She enjoys spending time with her friends and also works at the Windmill. I try to stay grounded, she says with a smile, reflecting on her down-to-earth lifestyle. One of her fondest memories of her time playing in Hopewell is simply a memory of making her coach laugh!

Hopewell Sports Nation: A Bright Future Ahead

As HSN continues to expand its coverage and provide a platform for the youth of Hopewell, athletes like Emily Crisi exemplify the hard work, dedication, and humility that make the community proud. With a strong sense of commitment to both her team and her future, Emily is undoubtedly a young athlete to watch in the years to come.

Hello Hopewell! While I am not originally a Hopewell native, it has been my home for over 12 years. My wife and I have three beautiful children that all play Hopewell sports including baseball and softball. My wife and I are both active in coaching our Children's teams. I am a member of the Hopewell Youth Baseball Board of Directors and you will probably see me out at the fields at least a few days a week. Most recently coaching my youngest sons TBALL team.
