Hopewell Boys Soccer Falls to Top Seeded Avonworth
The Hopewell Boys’ soccer team faced their toughest challenge of the season in a match against top seeded Avonworth.
Despite the loss, the game was marked by notable growth and positive takeaways for Hopewell, as they showed improvements in creating scoring opportunities compared to their previous two games against Beaver and Central Valley.
Avonworth set the tone early with quick-paced passing, controlling the game offensively for the first ten minutes. Avonworth capitalized on their pressure just five minutes into the game, finding the back of the net to put themselves on the scoreboard first. After the early goal, Hopewell managed to settle down defensively, limiting Avonworth’s attacks and keeping them to a single shot for much of the first half.
Hopewell’s first scoring opportunity came when Nykyeron Leonora tried to connect a pass to Tommy Armour, which was just out of his reach. The physicality of the game ramped up, with both teams going back and forth.
Avonworth unfortunately was able to connect for two more goals in the first half.
Hopewell finally broke through with a goal right before halftime, when John Sakson found the net off an assist from Bryce Ray, bring the score to 3-1 at halftime.
In the second half, Hopewell came out determined, creating more chances offensively with attempts made by Armour, Sakson and Rocco Marcantonio. A huge defensive play came when RJ Bushnell was able to clear a dangerous shot in goal to prevent Avonworth’s fourth goal.
Hopewell’s last scoring opportunity of the night was when Quincy Sannan found Sakson, who barely missed the net.
Avonworth’s relentless attacks eventually paid off with two long-range goals finding the net, pushing the final score to 5-1.
Despite the defeat, Hopewell’s offense showed improvement, with more scoring opportunities than their last two games. Defender Alexander Alvarado had a really good game for Hopewell.
Credit to Avonworth as they’re one of the best teams in the WPIAL and when looking at some of these results, keep in mind, Hopewell is playing in one of the toughest sections in the state.
Results will happen. PATIENCE.
With clear signs of growth, the Hopewell boys are determined to capitalize on their opportunities in their next game against Riverside on Saturday at Tony Dorsett Stadium. The match will begin at 1 PM.
