Hopewell Boys Track and Field Team Reach New Heights in Big Wins at Freedom
The Hopewell Boys Track and Field team traveled to Freedom Thursday for a section meet against Freedom and Rochester. After weeks of competing in the wind and rain and cold, the sum came out, which brought out a lot of personal best performances and one big school record.
Junior pole vaulter Connor Program had the biggest performance of the day. The Beaver County pole vault champion cleared the bar at 13’7″, breaking the old school record of 13’6″ set by Jack Georgetson in 2017. With another season and a half ahead of him, the sky is the only limit for what heights he can achieve.
Senior Ethan Pletcher got a massive personal best in the shot put with a 42’6″ throw- an improvement of nearly 3 feet!
Pletcher, sophomore Dom Gaughan, and senior Colton Litfin swept the Freedom boys in the discus and took the top two spots against Rochester.
Sophomore Vinny Boris continued to improve his javelin, with a PR throw of 115’5″ and a 3rd place finish.
Sophomore Bryce Ray took first in the long jump against both Freedom and Rochester with a new PR of 18’3.5″.
Junior Dan Earley cleared the 5’8″ bar in the high jump for the first time, winning the event for the day, and freshman Michael Biesenkamp was 2nd with his PR of 5’0″.
On the track, senior Trevor Neal held off a furious rally from Freedom’s Jimmy Couch to anchor the 4x800m relay team to a win.
Matthias Goth and Tyler Lewis were 1st and 2nd overall in the 110m hurdles. Luke McGrail picked up a 3rd place against Rochester.
Sophomore Josh Brunton ran his fastest 100m ever (11.70), finishing 3rd Freedom’s Kaden Bailey, and Hopewell junior Zach Kovell (11.56). His brother Jacob Brunton also PR’d with a 12.26.
Zach Landry and Jack McGrail were 1st and 2nd against Rochester, and 2nd and 3rd against Freedom in the 1600m.
Freshman Greg Gigliotti was first in the 400m against Freedom with a new PR of 57.74, and Nico Flitcraft was second.
Goth and Zach Lucas were 2nd and 3rd against Freedom in the 300m hurdles and swept the event against Rochester along with Ayden Hepner.
Landry and Ean Maxwell went 1 and 3 in the 800m against Freedom.
Kovell and both Brunton’s swept the 200m against Freedom.
