Hopewell 5th Grade Girls Basketball Travel Team Win the 40th Annual Our Lady of Fatima William L. Davis Memorial Tournament
A big congratulations to our 5th Grade Girls Basketball Travel Team for their tremendous performance in winning the 40th Annual/Our Lady of Fatima William L. Davis Memorial Tournament on Sunday.
The Lady Vikings defeated Ave Maria, 27-20 in the Championship Game.
Once again this was a well-run tournament, and it was awesome to a packed gym for this championship game between Hopewell and Ave Maria.
The key to this game was the inside-outside threat that Coach Jamie Yurcina’s team had with the duo of Rilynn Davis and Lydia Jaquay. Davis scored a game-high 12 points, while Jaquay followed her up with 9 points.
Here is a recap of today’s championship win for Hopewell.
1ST QUARTER SUMMARY:
-First basket of the game came on a 3-point shot from Davis, who connected from the top of the circle. Hopewell 3-0.
-After grabbing a defensive rebound, Jaquay showed off her dribbling skills by driving the length of the court for a layup. Hopewell 5-1.
-Later in the quarter, Jaquay with a missed shot but Davis gets the offensive rebound and puts it back in for 2. Hopewell 7-1.
END OF 1ST QUARTER: HOPEWELL 7 AVE MARIA 1.
2ND QUARTER SUMMARY:
-The Hopewell guards get the ball down low to Jaquay, who gets fouled shooting. She’d make 1 of 2 from the line. Hopewell 8-1
-The combination of Davis and Jaquay again. Rilynn with the miss but Lydia fights for the rebound and puts in a layup. Hopewell 10-1.
-Davis showed some range as she connects on a step back jumper. Hopewell 12-3.
-Nice defense by Hopewell as Isla Rock comes up with the steal and drives the length of the court for a layup. Hopewell 14-3.
-More Vikings defense as this time it’s Naveah Pope with the steal and she’d get fouled shooting. Pope would then make 2 FT’s from the line. Hopewell 16-3.
HALFTIME: HOPEWELL 16 AVE MARIA 3.
3RD QUARTER SUMMARY:
-To start things off in the 2nd Half, Jaquay with another offensive rebound and a layup. Hopewell 18-5.
-After grabbing another offensive jumper, Jaquay steps back and connects on a corner jumper. Hopewell 20-7.
-Pope comes up with another steal, after a missed shot, Davis gets the rebound in the corner and hits a jump shot. Hopewell 22-7.
-Then with less than a second left in the quarter (.4 seconds), Davis converts a layup and was should. Davis would make the foul shot. Hopewell 25-7.
END OF 3RD QUARTER: HOPEWELL 25 AVE MARIA 7.
4TH QUARTER SUMMARY:
-The only basket of the final 6 minutes came from No. 8 Madison Morgan, who took it in strong for a layup. Hopewell 27-11.
FINAL SCORE: HOPEWELL 27 AVE MARIA 20
