Hopewell Track and Field
Recap Of Hopewell Track Teams Second Meet of the Season
Hopewell Track and Field returned to Youngstown State University on Saturday for their second indoor meet of the winter. Despite a short week of practice, 5 of the 7 Vikings were able to establish new personal bests in their events.
Senior Matthias Goth took a healthy .15 seconds off his 60m hurdles time in the preliminary heats, running 9.58 and qualifying for the final for the second week in a row. In the final he bettered his time again with 9.56 over the barriers and finished 15th overall.
Freshman Luke McGrail saw his first high school track and field action, running 7.93 in the 60m, and going 17’3” in the long jump. He also ran a leg on the 4×200 relay team with Julian Baldwin, and Jacob and Josh Brunton.
Jacob and Josh Brunton both improved their personal best times in the 60m by .01 seconds. Senior Jacob ran 7.88, and sophomore Josh went 7.45, and finished 18th overall. Sophomore Julian Baldwin posted a 7.82 time in the 60m as well.
Sophomore Antony Flitcraft had another strong run in the 1600m finishing in 5:14.94 and 68th out of over 100 runners.
Junior Emma Palmieri finished 3rd overall in the 400m, running a nearly identical 1:01.40 time to her school record that she set last week. She then followed that up by absolutely scorching her own school record mark in the 200m. Her time of 26.89 was nearly a whole second faster than the 27.79 she posted last week, and was her fastest time over the furlong indoors or outdoors!
The next indoor meet on the schedule is February 10, so the team will have three solid weeks of training to prepare to continue to improve their marks. The warmer weather coming this week will be a welcome change and allow them to get back outside on the track for some quality work.
