🏐📈 Setting the Standard: Hopewell Boys Volleyball’s Climb Through the WPIAL
🏐🔥 Hopewell Boys Volleyball Battling Early, Building Toward Big Goals 🔥🏐
The Hopewell boys volleyball team took a hard-fought loss on the road at Pine-Richland, falling 0-3 to one of the top programs in the region. Pine-Richland, ranked #3 in the highest classification (3A), proved to be a tough test—but the Vikings showed they belong, competing point-for-point throughout the match.
Despite the result, Hopewell’s varsity squad sits at an impressive 4-1 on the season, with a résumé that includes dominant wins over Brentwood (3-0), Moon (3-0), Keystone Oaks (3-0), and Mars (3-0). Their only blemish came against elite competition at Pine-Richland.
The junior varsity squad is also off to a strong start, posting a 2-1 record with wins over Moon (2-1) and Mars (2-0), before dropping a close contest to Pine-Richland (1-2).
💬 Coach Hall: Depth, Experience Fueling Early Success
Head Coach Rob Hall has been encouraged by what he’s seen so far—especially given the adversity his team has already faced.
“I’m happy with how we performed so far this season especially because we have been missing starters for various reasons in almost every single match,” Hall said. “So it really helps our depth knowing guys can step up and play different positions when needed.”
That depth is no accident. Hopewell returns nearly its entire roster from last season, bringing experience and continuity to the court.
“We have a very experienced roster this year only losing one player from last year’s roster—most of our guys are 2 or 3 year starters.”
🏆 Battle-Tested by Design
While some programs might shy away from tough non-section schedules, Hopewell embraces the challenge. The Vikings have already faced—and will continue to face—top-tier opponents like Moon, Mars, Pine-Richland, North Catholic, and Seton LaSalle, along with tournament appearances at Norwin and Upper St. Clair.
“I know our schedule is tough,” Hall said with a laugh. “But it’s by design—iron sharpens iron. I want my kids exposed to playing bigger schools with high-level coaches. I want to see where our weaknesses are before we hit section play so we can have our best lineup ready to go.”
⚔️ Surviving the Gauntlet: Section 4
If the non-section schedule wasn’t challenging enough, Hopewell competes in what many consider the deepest and toughest section in WPIAL 2A.
Only three of six teams qualify for the postseason, raising the stakes every single match.
2025 Section Standings:
- Ambridge (9-1)
- South Fayette (8-2)
- Hopewell (6-4)
- Montour (3-7)
- OLSH (2-8)
- Trinity (2-8)
And the competition is only getting stronger.
“This year in the coaches rankings, five teams from our section are ranked in the top 10 of 2A WPIAL rankings,” Hall noted. “Night in and night out, it’s really high-level competition. Every team has high-level players and coaching.”
🔁 Program Turnaround Under Hall
Now in his sixth season, Coach Hall has completely reshaped the Hopewell program.
When he took over in 2021, the team had not won a section match since 2016 and had just three total wins between 2017 and the COVID-shortened 2020 season.
Since then:
- 28 section wins
- 47 overall wins
- 4 playoff victories
- Semifinal appearance (2021)
- Quarterfinal appearances (2023, 2025)
“I’ve been lucky to have players and parents who buy into our program and our culture,” Hall said.
“The credit goes to my players. As coaches we teach and guide them, but they have to execute on the court.”
He was also quick to credit his staff:
“I couldn’t have done it without my staff—Malcolm Meredith, our head assistant and JV coach, and Adam Barkman. Both very good coaches and even better men. I’m lucky to have them.”
⭐ Veteran Leadership Leading the Way
Hopewell’s success starts with a strong senior core, led by captains Alex Alvarado and Jake Pollick.
Alvarado, recently named Player of the Week, and Pollick, a 2nd Team All-WPIAL selection, have been anchors for the program.
“Both are great kids and players—it’s been fun to watch them grow,” Hall said. “Jake has started for four years and Alex for three. We’ll rely on them again this season. I’m excited to see what they can do—but I’ll definitely miss them next year.”
They’re joined by key senior contributors:
- Evan Lahtinin (Middle Hitter)
- Brayden Mowry (Middle Hitter)
- Nathan Frederick (Serving Specialist)
- John Wargula (Serving Specialist)
The varsity roster is rounded out by a talented junior group:
- Luca Flitcraft (Setter)
- Chris Nguyen (Libero)
- Dominic Buchanan (OH)
- Quincy Sannan (DS)

🔮 The Road Ahead
With a deep, experienced roster, a demanding schedule, and proven leadership, Hopewell is positioning itself for another postseason push. The early test against Pine-Richland may go down as a loss in the standings—but it could pay dividends when it matters most.
If the Vikings can navigate the brutal Section 4 slate, don’t be surprised to see them make noise once again in the WPIAL playoffs.
