Vikings Bowl towards Victory against Montour
The Hopewell Vikings Bowling Team continued their season with a huge matchup against the Montour Spartans on Wednesday at Crafton-Ingram Lanes.
The Viking Boys avenged their only two losses last year by defeating the Spartans 5-2 in a great matchup between the two expected best teams in the Southwestern section. After narrowly losing to the Spartans last year, the Vikings traveled to the Spartans home house and left with a decisive victory. The Vikings were led by Junior Brayden Mowry, who shot a career best 255 game and a career-high 586 series to lead all Vikings. Sophomore leadoff Ayden Gault contributed his career-high series of 536 and freshman Max Butter contributed a 546 series to the cause in what was a tremendous freshman debut in his first full match of his high school career. Junior Aidan Heppner and Senior Daniel Earley, the two bowlers with the highest averages in the section rounded out the Viking lineup and continued their campaign to lead the league in scoring. Â The Viking Boys could not be off to a better start to their season with two very impressive early victories.
The Viking Women lost a competitive 7-0 match to the Lady Spartans but were finally at full strength as they were joined by Sophomore Annabeth Sembower, the leading 2023-2024 freshman bowler in the section and WPIBL regional qualifier, who made her season debut and shot her first career 500 series to lead all women. It’s early, but I suspect that will be the highest female series in the entire section this week. Sophomore Krysten Clary contributed her own career high series with a 336. Senior captain Jenna Willy added in a 373 for the Viking Women who will look to improve on this result for their next few matches.
In JV action, the Viking Boys team won a 7-0 match featuring career high series’ from sophomores Aiden Klette and Will Holland. Freshman Thomas Turino shot a career high 161 and senior Zach Hughes scored a career high 149. Senior Lucas Gieleta continued his quest to crack the speed of light and successfully threw a bowling ball 21 miles per hour – what can I say, when you win you have fun!
Match MVP awards were given to Junior Brayden Mowry and Sophomore Annabeth Sembower. Winning those this week was not easy considering just how many personal records the Vikings broke in this match-up. This author struggled to write a sentence that didn’t involve the words ‘career-high’.
The Vikings will be back in action on Thursday for their home opener at Sheffield Lanes vs. Quaker Valley at 3pm. We hope to see you there!
