HSN Interviews Twerp Football Coach Jeremy Boehm
Hopewell Sports Nation caught up with Youth Football Coach Jeremy Boehm as the Youth Football Twerp program kicked off this year.
Coach Boehm, went to Pittsburgh Public Schools, and Moon Area High School, class of 1998. As a proud father of 3 sons, (9, 11, & 14 yrs.) Coach Boehm has volunteered and participated in the coaching and training of youth athletes in practically every sport in which his sons have participated.
Coach Boehm gave HSN a quick recap into his professional sports background, “I’ve worked closely with local athletes and their families in multiple sports including wrestling, baseball, martial arts, soccer, boxing, and football. I played sports for 9 Years including football, boxing, martial arts, and track. While I no longer participate in any sports on a competitive level, I still train regularly to maintain personal well- being.
I’ve been a Hopewell Youth Football coach from 2021 to 2023 and I am currently the Vice President Hopewell Youth Football League, I’ve been married to my wife Jennifer for 15 years. We collaborate, encourage, and support each other’s growth and ambition. Our shared interests include family, community, music, travel, wine, exercise, outdoors, sports, books, real estate, and movies. I take pride in the patience and communication skills that I have developed over years of working with children.
I believe that volunteerism in youth programs is the most direct way to positively influence our community. It is up to us as role models to teach and guide our youth to develop respectable and productive adults. I believe that youth sports provide an environment for young people to develop critical life skills such as respect, discipline, humility, teamwork, and pride in their community. “Football is a great deal like life in that it teaches that work, sacrifice, perseverance, competitive drive, selflessness and respect for authority is the price that each and every one of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.” -Vince Lombardi
Thank you for HSN’s interest and continued support of our local sports programs. Our community truly appreciates all that you do!
HSN continued to discuss with Coach Boehm the in and outs of the Youth Football Organization. Coach Jeremy provided some basic details around the league for those of our viewers that might be interested in what they’re about for their own kids deciding which sport they might want to play.
The Hopewell Youth Football & Cheer League is a 501C3 non- profit organization, created in the interest of providing recreational sports to local athletes from Kindergarten thru 6th grade. (Twerps: K-2, Termites: 3rd & 4th, Mitey Mites: 5th & 6th) While we collaborate with the Junior High and Varsity level teams, we are an independent organization that is not affiliated with the school district. This is an organization of volunteers that donate their time in the interest of providing a safe and positive environment for youth athletes of Hopewell Township. We raise our own funds and conduct our own program based on established bylaws and democratic process. However, we collaborate with the varsity staff in an attempt to best prepare our young guys for the next level. This is a “feeder program” and our youth athletes are anticipated to be the varsity players of the future. Any play structure, language, technique that can be applied at the lower level will make for an easier transition to the upper level.
“I got involved with the HYFL program in 2022 when my youngest son, Kellen decided to play. I’ve been involved with coaching and training different sports with all 3 of my sons over the past 10 years. I’ve enjoyed them all, but Football definitely has a special place in my heart. I remember all of the great coaches that I had as a kid and love that I get the opportunity to be that guy to someone else! I truly feel that youth sports are essential to developing invaluable life skills like; discipline, hard work, resilience, team work, pride, and humility. Not to mention the excitement of competition! Coaches often remark that on game day, those old butterflies come back and you feel like you’re about to play again!” – Said Coach Boehm
As a small town with a declining population most recreational youth sport programs struggle with enrollment, Coach Boehm explained that Youth Football is not immune to this either, “Hopewell Football has had its struggles over the years with getting the number of participants that is typically required to have a winning season. Different sports all compete for the participation of our local athletes, and unfortunately football isn’t the first choice for a lot of families. However, last year 2 of our 3 teams made it to the playoffs, so we’re doing something right! We hope to build enrollment by increasing awareness of our program in the community. A lot of folks are surprised to know that our coaches are enrolled in national courses to ensure a quality program of safe-play, concussion awareness, and sound fundamentals. This season we have 18 Twerps, 24 Termites, and 33 Mitey Mites. I would love to see enrollment in the 30’s at all levels to match the numbers of our most competitive opponents.”
Our 2024 Twerps are a special group, filled with awesome young guys just starting their journey into this sport. There’s a great mix of talent and personality on this team. We’re taking on New Brighton this weekend and I’m really excited to put our hard work into action!
Currently Coach Boehm’s Twerp team is 2-1 after yesterdays Victory vs. New Brighton. HSN has been at each of the teams practices and Coach Boehm along with his assistant coaches work very hard with these youngsters to instill a sense of discipline, professionalism and fun for the sport of Football. It is no easy task rallying 18, 6-7 year olds into specific line formations, especially when half of them are new to football for the first time.
Hopewell Sports Nation will continue its coverage of Hopewell Youth Football this season stay tuned for all of the updates.
