Final 2024 Individual and Team Statistics for the Hopewell Vikings Football Team
The 2024 season officially ended last Friday for the Hopewell Vikings High School football team, following a season ending loss at North Catholic.
The Vikings ended the season with a record of 4-6 and played meaningful games at the end of a season for the first time in many years.
Although their goal of qualifying for the playoffs, program was achieved and noticeable under first year head coach Matt Mottes, who in my opinion, should be named the conference Coach of the Year.
While I’m not proclaiming that Hopewell football is completely back and ready to compete for a championship, I am saying that there was enough visible evidence that should make the district and the fan base excited for what’s ahead for the program.
Positives That Stood Out to Me:
*Best win total since 2017 season.
*Total Points Scored in 2024: 296
Total Points Scored in 2023: 135
Total Points Scored in 2022: 150
*This team was just more competitive and that’s impressive considering the competition that they faced the entire season. If Hopewell was in a different conference, there’s no doubt this team would have qualified for the playoffs. However, that’s not the case and took on programs such as Beaver, Avonworth, Central Valley, Freeport and North Catholic, all of which are playoff teams.
*Hopewell’s offense found an identity with its running attack and is something they’ll be able to lean on for the upcoming seasons.
*The passing game made big improvements as the season progressed and considering all of the wide receivers and tight ends return in 2025, it should continue to get better and better.
Areas To Improve in 2025:
*Defense. The Vikings were outscored 365 to 296 on the scoreboard this season. In the offseason, players will work to get bigger and stronger and after a year in the system, will know what’s expected of them. But, as a team, they can’t allow 36 points per game in 2025. That will no doubt be a top priority of the offseason.
*Kick Coverage Team: Too many times late in the season, the opposing team (many of which were really good teams) were starting their possessions near or pass midfield. For whatever the reason, that will be something that will need to improve next season.
*The Vikings definitely have some core players to build around but to take that next step and become a legitimate playoff team, some more players will need to develop and become key contributors in 2025. I believe this team has some players that are ready to take that next step, now it’s just a question of whether it happens. Off-season work in the weight room and with the speed and strength and conditioning coaches will be key.
