Hopewell High School Baseball Drops 8-1 Decision to Montour
For the second straight game, a big inning by the Montour Spartans leads them to a win over Hopewell.
On Monday in their 7-2 loss, it was a 4-run 5th inning that did Hopewell in and Tuesday night, Montour was able to score 5 runs in the 3rd inning which propelled them to an 8-1 victory.
Hopewell’s record now stands at 6-5 and 3-3 in the section, while first place Montour moves to 9-2 and 6-0 in section.
Emmett McCowin got the start last night for Hopewell and received some help in the first inning from his defense. With a runner at 1st bases and 1 out, senior Jake Robinson tripled to right field but on that play, Matteo Weber tried to score from 1st base, but right fielder Ben McDonald prevented that with a perfect strike to catcher Charlie Smetana, who put down to tag to keep the game scoreless. McCowin would end the inning with a strike out.
The Hopewell right-hander had a clean 1-2-3 2nd inning as he got two grounds balls and a pop fly to CF John Vescio to end the inning.
Hopewell took the lead in the 3rd inning. With one out, Zach Gigliotti drew a walk, which was followed by Lucas Walton getting hit by a pitch. Then with 2 on and 1 out, Kingston Krotec doubled to right field to score Gigliotti. Hopewell led 1-0.
Unfortunately, that lead didn’t last long as Montour responded with a 5-run 3rd inning, which included 4 hits and 3 walks.
Montour would then score 4 runs in the 4th inning to put the game away.
For the game, Hopewell collected 4 hits, 2 by McDonald, 1 from James Gill and 1 from Krotec.
Following McCowin, head coach Morgan Singletary called up sophomore Payton Korker, who went 3.2 innings, allowing 3 hits, 3 runs, 0 walks and 2 K’s.
After playing 3 games in 4 days, Hopewell gets a few days off before returning to action on Monday as they’ll travel to Central Valley. First pitch is set for 4 PM.
