Tuesday-Hopewell Vs. New Castle Track and Field Meet
Typical Spring weather here in Pittsburgh where we can see freezing temperatures in the early and late hours, but potentially have nice mid 60’s during the day, that was not the case yesterday. It was extremely cold and yet the Hopewell Vikings set out to the New Castle meet and performed well.
In speaking with Coach Jeff Brunton he highlighted some of the takeaways from yesterday meet for us here at Hopewell Sports Nation.  The girls team beat New Castle 72-54. The girls have a section meet winning streak going that started in 2016. Senior Emma Palmieri won the 100m, 400m, and anchored both the winning 4×100 and 4×400 relays.
  • Junior Maya Richburg was 2nd in the 100m and also on both relays.
  • Freshman Skylar Elias won the 1600m, and took second behind junior Caylee Sundy in the 800m.
  • Sophomore Marlee Page won the javelin.
  • Senior Mia Blakeslee won the high jump, and combined with Junior Lahna Murray and freshman Tessa Burgess to sweep the event.
On the boys side, Hopewell dropped a close meet in the team score to New Castle, but did have some outstanding performances.
  • Senior Zach Lucas won the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.89, which is currently ranked 24th in the state.
  • Sophomore Luke McGrail took second in 16.54. Zach Lucas also won the 300m hurdles, and junior Julian Baldwin took second in his first race in the event.
Someone Hopewell is very familiar with Senior Zach Kovell had a big day as he won the 400m by nearly 3 seconds and anchored the winning 4×400 relay too. Hopewell’s fastest time in many years (3:39) along with Josh Brunton, Nick Adams, and Julian Baldwin.
  • Freshman Jack Biega won the 800m (2:19) in his debut in the race.
Overall both teams had promising performances, but there is still a lot of work to do to fulfill our high expectations.  One thing is clear, the Track and Field team is off to a great start but the bar is set high this year, congratulations!  Hopewell Sports Nation will continue to bring insights from the TNF team, stay tuned!

Hello Hopewell! While I am not originally a Hopewell native, it has been my home for over 12 years. My wife and I have three beautiful children that all play Hopewell sports including baseball and softball. My wife and I are both active in coaching our Children's teams. I am a member of the Hopewell Youth Baseball Board of Directors and you will probably see me out at the fields at least a few days a week. Most recently coaching my youngest sons TBALL team.
