Hopewell Begins Search for New Basketball Coach – Player Weigh In on Change!

The Hopewell School District is looking for a new head coach for their high school boys’ basketball team. Mark D’Alessandris recently resigned ahead of the School Board Meeting, after coaching the program for three seasons, although his career goes back much farther having been the assistant coach for seven years prior.

All things considered the record is not fantastic over the last decade for this team, but has had its bright spots. For example this past season Zach Kovell joined the 1,000 point club after playing basketball for four years in High School and now goes on to college, announcing his commitment to West Minster.

Prioritizing Basketball may or may not be as easy as it sounds as Hopewell is a very small school. Many athletes play across multiple sports. Is there a deep enough bench of players that can commit to the basketball program year round in Hopewell or will other sports take precedence? Is a longer time commitment even needed to help build a winning program? Only time will tell and that will be the challenge for any new coach Hopewell finds, as the Hopewell Township area population shrinks there is less and less talent to spread out across all sports.

Hopewell Sports Nation checked in with Senior Zach Kovell who was not fully surprised by the announcement, “it was something that us as players had known was a possibility, when I heard the news it felt like it all became real. Change can be hard but I’m still confident in the boys next year to continue to work hard and perform no matter who the coach is, it was fun being coached by him for 4 years.”
