The Hopewell Vikings Bowling Team completed their regular season and celebrated their senior team members on Wednesday with a 21-0 sweep vs. Nazareth Prep Saints at Sheffield Lanes. In a Viking tradition, the seniors finished off their night by signing the Vikings Bowling banner which hangs at Sheffield Lanes and features the signature of every bowler to come through the program.
The Viking Boys capped off their 10-0 undefeated season with a 7-0 win against the Saints. This marks the first perfect season for the Vikings since the 2009 season. The Vikings were led this week with a team effort featuring all of their senior members. Senior captain Daniel Earley shot a match leading 256, while senior captain Reese Jacobs shot a career high 211 game and a career high 555 series. While most of the Vikings had individual accolades wrapped up for the year, Freshman Max Butter came into the match needing a 182 or better in his first game to qualify for the individual WPIBL playoffs – he needed about 8 frames to do it, shooting a 233 and guaranteeing his seat in the individual playoffs. Junior Brayden Mowry added a 232 and senior Cade McIlvain added a 206 to the effort for the Vikings who will head to the WPIBL team playoffs next week.
The Lady Vikings held up their end with a 7-0 win over the Saints and now need some help in order to qualify for the playoffs. With this win, the Lady Vikings improved their record to 6-4 and clinched the first winning season for the Lady Vikings since 2018. At worst, they’ll finish third in the section and have an outside chance at a second place finish and a playoff berth. The Lady Vikings were led by sophomore Annabeth Sembower shooting a match high 444 series and a match high 166 game. In her last regular season match of a great career, senior captain Jenna Willy added a career high 157 game and a 408 series to the 7-0 win for the Lady Vikings. The Lady Vikings will wait for official results to come on Sunday to see if they’ll advance to the WPIBL playoffs.
The JV Boys finished their perfect 10 – 0 season with a 7 – 0 win over the Saints. The Vikings were led by two remarkable individual efforts. Sophomore Aiden Klette shot his first 500 series with a 504 and sophomore Will Holland shot his first ever 200 game with a 201 game. The JV Vikings finished the season 70 – 0 winning every game of every match they bowled this year.
MVP awards were handed to two senior captains competing in their final regular season match. Senior Jenna Willy and senior Reese Jacobs each took home the last MVP of the season.
In individual news, while the team awaits official results over the weekend, it appears that five Vikings have qualified for the individual WPIBL playoffs. In order to qualify, a man must perform in 21 games and average 170+ and a woman must appear in 21 games and average 130+.
While results are still unofficial, the Vikings look to send the following to the individual playoffs: Senior Daniel Earley, sophomore Aidan Heppner, sophomore Ayden Gault and freshman Max Butter.
The Lady Vikings will be sending sophomore Annabeth Sembower to the individual playoffs.
Official results and seedings will be announced once they are made available by the WPIBL.
The Vikings will next bowl at Sims Lanes on Saturday where they’ll compete in the annual MAC Bowling Championships. The Viking Boys and Lady Vikings will look to land top 5 finishes while the JV Vikings will look to defend their silver division championship they won in 2024.
